However this can be taken as very poetic and may just be a metaphor. Many Christians believe that hell is just a place where God is not present. I think that the reason the concepts of Heaven and Hell are so hard to get to grips with is the fact that you can't apply empirical evidence to them. For Heaven and Hell to have and philosophical foundation they must make some philosophical sense- the philosophical sense would be that Heaven and Hell could offer a solution to the problem of evil.
