In reality the recent trend which has become much more apparent is that anti-Islamic feelings do exist due to the media consistently misrepresenting the aims of Islam and the majority of Muslims. The distorting mirror of racism still caricatures Islam in terms of polygamy, purdah (veil), religious zealotry and more recently a perceived militant fundamentalism that threatens the economic and political domination of the west. 'Islamophobia' as a word to address these feelings is open to criticism as the second part of the word 'phobia' indicates an individuals unexplained hatred or fear of someone or something.
