Thus it is with utmost despair that I accept Huntington's thesis, "it is a clash of civilizations!" Having received the finest of English and American educations at the highest levels, I am an avowed liberal and modernist with a lot of respect for American ideals. I cannot, therefore, accept that this clash was inevitable or cannot be avoided. Yet sanity seems to have left us and extremists on both sides want it. We moderates have been frozen out of the process. Even the media brands us to be on one extreme or the other. There appears to be no space in the middle even on BBC (compared to which CNN is beginning to look neutral). There are no more idealists and dissidents among the intellectuals. ...
