For all adult defendants, a custodial sentence means going to prison. Most defendants don't actually serve the full custodial sentence. Sentences can be shortened by good behavior in prison, leading to an early release. Offenders serving less than four years can usually be released after half the sentence, where the sentence is more than 2 months they will be released on license under the super-vision of the probation service.
