Lombroso along with others preached that human behavior was determined by inherent qualities, which influenced responses to environment in predetermined ways. Practice of law was correspondingly affected with these views. Since classical and positive schools both had different views about why people are criminal, the way in which they imposed 'punishment' and/or 'treatment' were relatively different. Classical views of the past focused on deterrence and therefore preached punishment; positivist views enforce getting at the underlying factors behind the crimes therefore preach treatment. Even though the principal ideas behind each of these two schools' ideologies are different, they both still remain relevant within the events of today's society; distinguishing between the principles being implemented is the daunting task, which puzzles people of today.
