These are 'employed barristers' who work for the government, but barristers can also be employed by commercial firms and companies. The Access to Justice Act 1999 now allows barristers working for the CPS or other employers to keep their rights of audience. Not all those who are qualified actually work as barristers either in private practice or in employment. Non-practising barristers have no right of audience.
