In ancient times, morality and religion were synonymous. Both the lawmakers and the laws they dictated were considered to be divinely inspired. Hebraic law for instance supported the equation of law and morality. But over the years that followed the possibility of laws that were legal and immoral was gradually accepted. The Greeks introduced the view that rationality was to be preferred to moral mysticism.
