Gobitis, et al, which declared mandatory flag salutes Constitutional, were only eventually overturned in later cases, including West Virginia Board of Education, et al. v. Bartnette, et al. Despite the clear standpoints, however, it eventually has become apparent that it is not constitutionally acceptable for a state to demand involuntary support in the form of a flag salute, under the laws granted by the government. Numerous conditions contribute to this viewpoint, including arguments toward national cohesion, assertions regarding the absoluteness of the rights granted by the Constitution, and judgments regarding the various different ways of interpreting the Constitution. The strife for national cohesion has often been argued as a justifiable means for mandating the recitation of the flag salute.
