In August in 1957 King was named as President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). The CLC organized and initiated the campaign of 'direct action'. This involved peaceful protests such as boycotts, demonstrations and marches. One of the most successful forms of protest was sit-ins. The SCLC succeeded in integrating public eating areas in 1961. Throughout 1961, King led demonstrations in Albany, Georgia. In 1963, he led further protests in Birmingham and Alabama. The text Challenge, Change and Continuity stated that "King's work in the early 1960's gained increasing national and international support for desegregation in all areas of American Life".
