As the war ended in 1865 the Reconstruction period began. During this period all hell broke loose in the South. After the northern victory in 1865 the North (military) virtually occupied the South throughout the ten-year Reconstruction period. Northern politicians, the Union army and the so-called carpet baggers treated the South harshly. This period witnessed the former slaves gaining rights as citizens.
