At first he is keen to get the job done and although his partner in the job Yolland is having second thoughts Owen dismisses his opinions. Yolland realises that the tradition of place names is important but Owen chooses not to believe this and tries to justify his actions by saying that most of the community have forgotten the tradition and therefore there is no point in keeping it alive. Yet although his job involves going against his people by taking away Irish heritage and ultimately rejecting the Irish language it is clear that as the play progresses he takes on board some of Yolland's views and begins to discover the true importance of naming.
