In the course of 2002 research was commissioned by the Scottish executive to explore the effects of the immigration and asylum act 1999 on asylum seekers. Part of the research focused on the press coverage of immigration. It revealed that during the period of January 2002 and July 2002, the amount of stories, which included references to 'asylum seekers' per month, averaged 700. The key thing to note here is that the term asylum seeker appeared in a variety of apparently non-related news-stories, without having any immediate apparent links to the main story covered. It would appear that during this period linking asylum seekers to diverse news reporting served as a way to keep the issue firmly in the public domain.
