He noted in his treatise about the existence of ridges, loops, and spirals in people's fingerprints. He studied these, but he made no mention of their value as a personal identification tool. A 1.8mm thick piece of skin was later named after him. This was called the Malpighi layer. A thesis discussing 9 fingerprint patterns was published in 1823 by a professor of Anatomy at the university of Breslau,. His name was John Evangelist Purkinji. But, just like Marcello Malpighi, he too didn't mention their use as a tool for personal identification.
