The first method of language teaching was born between the 17th and 19th century, where Latin was the dominant language, it focused more on learning grammar rules, translations and writing sentences, which had little relationship to the real world. In the mid 1880's to the mid 1980's a search was on for a more effective way of teaching foreign or second languages to students. Francis Gouin a French teacher of Latin derived the Series Method which was based on his theory that 'language learning is a matter of transforming perceptions into conceptions'. (Asian EFL Journal, 2005). Gouin's series method taught learners directly without translation and without grammatical rules, however it was replaced by the Direct Method founded by the German Charles Berlitz.
