Intrinsic motivation refers to the desire to do something for an internal reward, for the learners own sake and interest, which can in turn, present the best possible opportunities for learning. Self esteem and effort are factors relating to intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation derives from 'doing an activity because it is instrumental to an operationally seperable consequence' (Deci and Ryan) such as an external reward like high achievements, grades or praise. This refers to students partaking in activities for a particular reason and not because they have an interest in it. However it is encouraging for students who are not motivated. Alternatively, Deci and Ryan (1985) suggest that students will lose interest once their rewards are achieved.
