This essay will examine the some of the principal characteristics of poverty in Vietnam as identified by the World Bank's Consultations with the Poor exercise, providing a detailed summary of the state of poverty in the country today. The data collected by the world Bank is centred around uncovering the dimensions of poverty that are important to poor people, hence the report voices the opinions of 60,000 poor men and women from 60 countries, avoiding the prejudices often made by privileged Western researchers. In Vietnam four research sites were chosen to represent the diversity of the country from highland villages to coastal regions and urban areas. A number of factors such as locality, ethnicity and age determine how the poor are affected by poverty, for example rural residents place a higher value on land ownership than urban dwellers.
