The conventional indicators of progress and performance of the Indian economy over the last 50 years of colonial rule indicates that the rate of population increase fluctuated considerably before 1921 and the level of literacy , urbanization and life expectancy were low in the late 19th century. In the author's view, the slight improvement in the some indicators of living standards at various times over the last century of the colonial period is not an evidence of the beneficial factors of British rule, as also the evident poverty of large number of the Indian population at independence does not conclusively prove that imperialism was the sole cause of the improper distribution of subjects.
