She twists and contorts the facts to reach her conclusion that the narratives helped to "establish white women as the civilizers ."2 Carter argues that the experiences of the two Theresa's are embellished if not complete fabrications. The original versions of the women gave of their captivity, as reported in the newspapers of the day, had the women suffering no hardships or "indignities."3 Carter supplies the women with motives for changing their stories. Delaney's criticism of the government, for example, is eliminated because it might hurt her and Gowanlock's chances of receiving their pensions. Their fair treatment by the Cree and "the half-breeds" is eliminated or at least skewed to eliminate any "shades of grey".4 Carter's introduction keeps us in the dark about another version of the captivity that Theresa Gowanlock purportedly wrote ...
