These early theories began the debate on 'Nature versus Nurture' A number of these theories have now been dismissed as simplistic or naïve, but they must be remembered for their early methodology and the scientific nature of their research. As Hollin (2002) points out, one of the major psychological theories of the early Twentieth Century to concentrate on criminal behaviour was that of Cësare Lombroso (1835-1909). These theories were diametrically opposite to that of Classical Criminology, which believed in the total free will of the perpetrators of crime. Lombroso based his theories on the hereditability of criminogenic traits and was said to be greatly influenced by the theories of Charles Darwin (1809-1882).
