It is important that the worker has a strong awareness of their own personal moral code in order to determine which action is morally right. We come into the profession with existing attitudes from which stereotypes can be generated i.e. once an abuser, always an abuser. Personal values can affect our perceptions of an individual's behaviour, our expectations of that person and of the job itself and of our actions and the choices that we make as social workers. How much self awareness and confidence we have in our own values and work skills will affect our views and decisions and enable empowerment as we will worry less about what others think of our decision.
